I ended up wearing the pair in the middle. Neous is one of my favorite shoe brands, so I just gathered the white shoes I already had from them and figured one of them would work. ![]() Here’s how the big day went down, from the homemade details to the dress I waited two and a half years to wear. Our friends sweetly snapped a c ouple pictures of the moment.Īfter being delayed a couple years thanks to the pandemic, we were finally able to wed this past August at Vadim’s family home in France. We made it just in time for sunset, and apparently just in time for Zac to ask me to marry him. After we arrived, the host told us about a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean on the property. We rented an AirBnB on a goat farm for the weekend with a couple friends to see Animal Collective play at the Henry Miller Library. In the fall of 2019, Zac proposed in Big Sur. Vadim's family graciously hosted our wedding at their home, the place where we'd made some of our favorite summer memories over the years. Over the years, Zac became like an extended member of Vadim’s family, and spent time with them every summer at their house in the south of France, and I was lucky enough to join several times, too. They were sitting next to each other in a film class and coincidentally were wearing the same shoes from a niche French brand. That same quarter, Zac also happened to meet a lifelong friend, Vadim. We danced late into the night and went on to date for more than a decade after. ![]() Zac, also a UCLA student, happened to be there for the same party. Fast forward to Saturday, and I put on my best dress (an Alice + Olivia LBD with batwing lace sleeves and a bodycon skirt) and dragged my roommate along to the notorious hotspot Les Deux. Guests know what portion of the wedding they are invited to (1st ceremony, 2nd ceremony, vin d’honneur, reception dinner) based on the faire-part invitation they received. In February of 2007, my freshman year at UCLA, I got a random Facebook message inviting me to an acquaintance’s party. ![]() (Work colleagues, however, are rarely invited.) Along with their partners and children, the average number of guests can easily range from 100-400 people. The traditional French wedding involves inviting a lot of guests from childhood, distant relatives, and other people that the couple may not have seen for years. Now prepare to be shocked because the main reason to have a vin d’honneur (other than bridging the gap between the photographs and the dinner) is due to the fact that not all guests are invited to dinner.Īs a way for the wedding party to keep costs down, while still inviting everyone they would like to have, some guests are only invited to the vin d’honneur, after which they leave. Once both parties say “Oui”, the couple is pronounced officially married. The mayor will give a speech talking about the sanctity of marriage, the legal obligations, will ask if the couple are ready for the challenge. There are some beautifully elaborate Hotel de Villes across France (think Versailles-lite decoration), and most French couples are happy to have their official ceremonies there. There is no limit on how many people are invited to the civil vows, and the occasion is quite festive, especially if the couple is not doing a separate ceremony later. ![]() The timeslot could be at anytime of the day, the couple does not get to pick. The couple is given a timeslot to show up at the Salle des Mariages at the Hotel de Ville (the building of the town hall). If the bride and groom plan to have a larger wedding later, they may only invite close family and friends to witness the Mairie ceremony. The civil ceremony in front of the Mayor tends to be a small-ish affair.
